What I Look for Before Touching a Property

Introduction

Before any installation begins, there is a phase that determines everything that follows.

It is not design.
It is not planning.

It is observation.

TLDR — The Role of Observation

  • Understanding existing conditions prevents future issues

  • Water, soil, and sun patterns define success

  • Immediate action often leads to long-term inefficiency

  • Observation reduces unnecessary labor and cost

The Initial Approach

When approaching a property, the instinct is often to begin making changes.

Adding plants. Adjusting layout. Improving appearance.

But the most important information is already present.

What the Land Reveals

Every property has patterns:

  • Water flow and drainage

  • Areas of compaction or erosion

  • Sun exposure and shade movement

  • Plant success and failure zones

These patterns define what will and will not work.

The Cost of Skipping This Step

Without proper observation:

  • Plants are placed incorrectly

  • Drainage issues emerge

  • Maintenance increases unnecessarily

Work becomes reactive instead of intentional.

Building From Reality

When decisions are based on real conditions:

  • Systems align more quickly

  • Fewer corrections are needed

  • The landscape performs more consistently

This reduces both effort and cost over time.

Closing Reflection

The land provides the blueprint.

The work is learning how to read it.
