Welcome to The Steward Journal

A place to document living landscapes

The Steward Journal — VerdeVivo

Every landscape has a story.

Some stories unfold quickly through construction and installation. Others develop slowly over time as gardens mature, ecosystems strengthen, and the character of the land reveals itself.

The most meaningful landscapes are rarely created all at once.

They are stewarded.

Today marks the launch of the VerdeVivo website and the beginning of The Steward Journal, a place where we will document the philosophy, projects, and landscapes that shape our work.

Why This Journal Exists

Landscape work often happens quietly.

Gardens are maintained. Plants are pruned. Paths are cleared. Small improvements accumulate over time.

Yet behind this work is a deeper process of observation and care — understanding how the land evolves, how ecosystems interact, and how thoughtful stewardship can shape a place over many years.

The Steward Journal exists to share that process.

Here we will document:

• the evolution of stewarded landscapes
• the systems used to care for them
• lessons learned from working with tropical ecosystems
• reflections on land stewardship and landscape philosophy

Over time, this journal will become a record of how landscapes mature when they are guided intentionally.

Landscapes as Living Systems

At VerdeVivo, we believe landscapes are not static environments.

They are living systems.

Trees grow and change the light beneath them. Soil improves as plants establish deeper roots. Rain reshapes pathways and water movement across the land.

A stewarded landscape is one that evolves alongside these forces rather than fighting against them.

The work of stewardship is to guide that evolution with patience and awareness.

A Journey Beginning in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico provides an extraordinary landscape for this work.

The island’s tropical ecosystems are vibrant and constantly changing. Rainfall, heat, and fertile soil create landscapes capable of immense beauty and biodiversity.

But these environments also require attentive care.

Without stewardship, landscapes can quickly become overgrown or inaccessible.

With thoughtful guidance, they become immersive environments where cultivated gardens and natural ecosystems exist in harmony.

This journal will document that process as it unfolds across the properties we steward.

Looking Forward

The first project being documented is Rainforest Retreats, a property where the VerdeVivo stewardship model is beginning to take shape.

Over time, we will share the evolution of this landscape along with insights gathered from working with the land.

Gardens will mature.

Orchards will grow.

Paths will develop character.

And the landscape will continue revealing what it can become.

The Steward Journal is an invitation to follow that journey.
